Answer to one simple question can cost you clients

Too many independent consultants struggle to answer one simple question: “So… what do you do?”
And the answers?
📉 Extraordinarily vague: “I help businesses grow.” (Okay, but how?)
📉 Way too long-winded: “Well, it depends… I do strategy, operations, marketing, leadership coaching…” (Are you an agency? A coach? A strategist?)
📉 Completely nonsensical: “I optimize frameworks for scalable execution.” (What does that even mean?)
😬 But here’s the thing—it’s not because these consultants aren’t competent. Most are highly qualified. Many have decades of experience in their fields.
Yet they still struggle with positioning.
What Is Positioning (And Why Should You Care)?
Positioning is how you define and communicate your value so the right clients immediately “get it.” Great positioning does four things:
✅ Clearly defines who you help
✅ Pinpoints what specific problem you solve
✅ Differentiates you from everyone else doing similar work
✅ Shows the outcome of working with you (What results do you achieve? Why it matters?)
Because here’s the truth: Clients don’t buy processes. They buy outcomes.
If they can’t quickly understand what changes after they work with you, they won’t hire you.
Real-Life Example: Too Broad Positioning
“I help companies improve project management processes.”
❌ Which companies?
❌ What kind of projects?
❌ What’s the real outcome?
Change to: Clear Positioning
“I help early-stage SaaS startups implement Agile frameworks that scale, so they can hit product launch deadlines without chaos.”
🎯 Now it’s clear:
✔️ WHO they help → Early-stage SaaS startups
✔️ WHAT they do → Implement Agile frameworks
✔️ WHY it matters → So they can launch products without chaos
See the difference? The second version is memorable, specific, and outcome-driven.
